I like to read science fiction and fantasy.

Among the Japanese books I have read are:
Haruki Murakami's short story collection, "Yoru no Kumozaru"
"Tsuki no Kage, Kage no Umi", "Kaze no Umi, Meikyuu no Kishi" and "Higashi no Wadatsumi, Nishi no Soukai" from Fuyumi Ono's "Twelve Kingdoms" fantasy series, and the modern horror story, "Mashou no Ko" that is connected to that series
The first volume of Tsukasa Kouzumi's "Kare to Kanojo to Shoukan Mahou" series.
The first volume of Makoto Sanda's "Rental Majika" series.

I am currently reading Fuyumi Ono's "Kaze no Banri, Reimei no Sora."

Hello, everyone.

I love reading!
I especially love reading the British children books and detective novels. I started reading English books a year ago. I've read some picture books, children books and about 20 books for English leaners. I'm reading "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban".I passed STEP(Society for Testing English Proficiency) pre-level2 this February. I'm not good at English, but I think I manage to read the Harry Potter series.

みなさん、こんにちは。
読書大好きです!
特にイギリスの児童文学とミステリが大好きです。英語で読書は一年前からはじめました。
絵本と児童書を少しと、英語学習者用の本をだいたい20冊くらい読みました。
いまはハリーポッターとアズカバンの囚人を英語で読んでるところです。
私は今年の2月に英検準二級に合格した程度のレベルで、英語は得意じゃないですけどハリーポッターなんとか読めてます(と、思います)。

Hello!(^^)/

My first book in English was "The Magician's Nephew" by C. S. Lewis.
Now I'm reading "Twisted" by Jeffery Deaver.

I have many books which I bought but I haven't read yet.(;_;)
Next, I'd like to read "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" or "Mirror Mirror" by Gregory Maguire. He is an author of "Wicked."

I have "Little House" series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I'd like to read them too.

The main reason why I read books in English is that they are not translated into Japanese. If I have Japanese version, I prefer to read it.(^^;)

Oct 15, 2008 richvh
「魔術師のおい」ですか。残りのナルニア国シリーズを読んだことがありますか。

"The Magician's Nephew"? That's part of the Narnia series, isn't it? (Yes, I see you said it was in your Japanese.) Have you read the rest of the Narnia series?
Oct 15, 2008 natanata
Hello Everyone.

I am studying Japanese and Korean, but I cannot read novels in those languages. Can I still join you? :'(

I like fantasy stories. Harry Potter for one, the Narnia series, and so on.

My favorite author happens to be Murakami Haruki.
I am reading Norwegian Wood (for the second time). ^^

natanata-san, of course you can. This club is for people who like reading.
(By the way, my father is studying Korean as well. He likes watching Korean TV dramas.)

I've read Norwegian Wood.He is really popular. He has his own style. It's unique. I think nobody imitates it.

You are welcomed of course!

Hi everybody! :) My name is Agata, I come from Poland. Pleased to meet you!
I like horror stories the best, but if it's good literature I'll read it for sure, no matter what the genre.

I'm sorry, I'm too lazy to provide translation right now :P Hope that isn't a problem.
もし何か間違いとか、不自然なところがあれば、書き直していただけませんか。
Nov 16, 2008 Rana
アガタさん、ようこそ(^^)/

江戸川乱歩で卒論ですか!どんな切り口で書かれるのでしょうか?面白そう!「人間椅子」とか昔好きでした。

「不思議の国のアリス」は子供の頃読みましたが、なんだか不思議なお話でよくわかりませんでした。今読めばまた違う感想を持つかもしれませんね。

>Stephen Kingをよく読んでいます。
>一番好きな一冊だけを選ぶって
>日本の小説なら、一番魅力があって、印象深かったのは
Nov 16, 2008 Aquedita

Nov 17, 2008 rio
わあ、江戸川乱歩について卒論を書くんですか。
おととい、江戸川乱歩の「人間豹」を基にした歌舞伎を観に行きましたよ。

日本の作家なら私のおすすめは宮部みゆきです。
彼女もミステリー作家ですが、いくつかの本は英訳されてますし、
たぶんこれからどんどん翻訳されるんじゃないかなぁ、と思います。
Nov 17, 2008 Aquedita
リオさん、お返事ありがとう^_^

歌舞伎はすごく面白そうですね。能より分かりやすいじゃないかなぁ。
宮部みゆきについて教えてくれてどうもありがとう。チャンスがあれば、是非読んでみたいと思います。

Hello! everyone!
My name is trplove. I'm Japanese. I like to read any kinds of books (comics, novels, essays...etc.) . I want to become a full-time English teacher at junior high school some day..
Recently, I have challenged to read novels in English.
I read “Pocahontas ” and” Gorsh the Cellist(セロ弾きのゴーシュ)” yesterday.
In the future, I want to teach my students the fun of reading books in English.

Hi! I love reading but haven't had much time to read fiction since graduate school. In English, I enjoy reading science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, historical fiction, graphic novels, and translated manga. I have been trying to read leveled/graded readers and children's books in Japanese, but my level is very low.

As I am a professional English teacher, I recommend 多読/extensive reading to anyone trying to learn English. http://www.tadoku.org/ is a good resource if you are Japanese. I recommend trying the Cambridge readers if you can't read English novels yet. Translated manga is good too. I sometimes write about this topic in my blog for English students, actually. (Look for the "reading" tag at readableblog.com :D)

I really think reading is both fun AND a wonderful way to improve vocabulary and grammar. In a classroom, it's hard to learn things like the/a in English or wa/ga in Japanese. These things can be picked up more naturally by reading something that's fun and easy to read. But if it's too hard and you can't concentrate on the story, you won't be able to pick up anything, so make sure it's easy enough.

Anyway, I got a lot of books for Christmas, so I hope I can read some fiction soon!

Thank you for making this group!

Hello. I'm a Japanese female and actually I don't read so much.
But I like books. I like the intellectual atmosphere of bookstores and libraries.
I wish I could read English books with fun.

I have tried "extensive reading" a few years ago. I have many books from Cambridge, Oxford, and Penguin readers, but I still haven't read them all yet.
wintersweetさん's comment cheers me up so much:)
I'll try reading them again!
Cambridge readers were good series. Much better than other leveled books.

First of all, I'll have to acquire the habit of reading...!

wintersweetさん、こんにちは。
I think 多読 is very good. I think the most important thing of doing 多読 is that you can enjoy it! If you think "I have to do 多読!", it is not enjoyable. My ideal is "I just enjoyed reading books, and now I can understand English much better. I learned English, though I didn't notice it."(^^)

Aodreyさん、こんにちは。
Haha, I think I know your feeling. I like the smell of libraries.(^^)
When you find interesting books, please let us know.(^^)/

Hi everyone!!!!

I love reading, I started since I was a little girl, my mum used to read me a short story before going to sleep and I think my obsession with books began then.
I'm a mexican studying so many languages that I think I've gone crazy by now. Mostly I read in English and French and I've tried to read in Japanese, but the kanjis drive me crazy and I end up throwing the book against a window...
I love fantasy novels and romance, mystery, vampires, fiction... pretty much anything.
"How many books have you read in the language you are studying so far?" Oh dear that's a hard one. Let's see. About 31 books in English (I'm not taking into account all my mangas since they are all in English and I have no idea how many they are) and about 5 in French. I started 1 in Japanese and haven't finished it yet ^^U.
Right now I'm reading "Son of a witch". I like it.
And I think I've wrote too much already ^^.

I'm Swedish, and I've been a reader all my life. As a child, I loved mystery books, fantasy, and historical fiction, and old fashioned childrens books (such as the Narni series, Anne of Green Gables, Little House on the Prairie, etc!).

Some of my favourite Swedish authors today are Selma Lagerlöf, Karin Boye, Birgitta Trotzig, Gabriella Håkansson... I also read most of my international fiction in translation (for example I don't know one word of Japanses but I've recently discovered Haruki Murakami, by reading "Sputnik Sweetheart" - loved it!) but I also read a lot in English; I can't possibly say how many. Other favourites of mine are: Virginia Woolf, J.C. Oates, Nina Bouraoui, Jane Austen, Sarah Waters; too many to mention. I quite often find myself to really love one or two books by someone, but that doesn't have to mean that I devour their entire production. For example, "Jane Eyre" is one of my favourite books ever, but I haven't read her other novels. Nor have I read much by A.S. Byatt, but I adore her "Possession"!....

I'm on Lang-8 to practise my French. I can count the number of French novels I've read: 15. :) I like them all, more or less, but to mention a few I could say "La symphonie pastorale" by André Gide, "Les amies d'Héloïse" by Hélène Monferrand, and Marguerite Duras' "Le ravissement de Lol V. Stein".

At the moment I'm reading "Nightwood" by Djuna Barnes, and "Je vous écris comme je vous aime" by Élisabeth Brami.

Amles, welcome to the group :)
Hope you'll have lots of good reads and maybe even send us some reviews?

Haven't read that much French literature to tell the truth, only a couple of titles back in high-school. I do feel it's a shame.

Cheers,
