Lightning is made from electricity. During violent thunderstorms the electric charge in the atmosphere increases. The electrical potential of the air becomes high, so electrical current begins to flow between the air and the ground. But, air is an electrical resistor. If there is electrical current in the air, the temperature must become high. The electricity in lightning flows in a narrow path. Because the electrical current makes the air temperature very high, the air begins to glow. The sudden change in the air causes sound to be produced. That is lightning.
From time to time, people are killed by lightning. If there is the electrical current from lightning in the body, the heart can be stopped. People are also burned by lightning. So, during thunderstorms be careful about the danger of lightning.
