The other day, I watched an incredible talk about alpha males within chimpanzees. I was expecting to hear boring information about physical strength and violence as key elements for leadership. I couldn’t be more wrong! It seems that the relationships between the chimpanzees are more complex to be summed up in this naïve framework. In their fight to lead the group, the males have to collaborate closely in a way similar to our political system. They get together and show forms of union to intimidate any potential threats. Others will sacrifice their foods to the group in order to get their trust and approval, and go as far as spending time with the babies.

The most interesting part in the talk is that the best alpha males are truly loved by the others, and when they get unwell, the rest of the group will strive to ensure that their needs are satisfied. Personally, I don’t think they do it out of fear but respect and love, and here there is plenty of lessons to our corrupt politicians.
