I attend a stretching class every four or six weeks. The participants practice stretching, and contemporary dance as well. I like "contact improvisation", which is a dance in pairs. The two keep touching each other's body and move together without saying any words. I think that in my head it is always loud with the sound of words, so it's good for me to have a time trying to communicate with someone non-verbally.
Last weekend, our dance instructor suggested a different type of impromptu. I was paired with another regular participant. He held his right palm out near my face. I looked at it and followed it as he moved. As he changed the heights or angles of his hand, I turned. After the short impromptu, the dance instructor asked him for a comment. He answered: "I kind of felt that understanding the other is sometimes difficult, not impossible, but difficult. She didn't understand my instructions. When I wanted to let her go in a certain direction, she wouldn't go, never moved the way I had expected. I was trying to show her suggestions of easy ways, but she always wanted to do something different and harder. I thought, if you want to go in that direction, it is okay with me."
I burst into laughter. I've heard similar comments on me several times before, but without the part "If you want to go... I am okay". I was grateful to my kind dance partner.
I don't mean to be defiant, but when I don't understand what the other means, I just move freely as I want.
