Cosmical Joke

In Woody Allen's Annie Hall, the protagonist, Alvy Singer, suffered depression in his childhood. He read that the universe was expanding, so he concluded that it will eventually explode. "You're here in Brooklyn. Brooklyn is not expanding!" his mother screamed at him.

It may seem silly, but some children with high IQ have panic attacks for very similar reasons. They are depressed because they won't be able to master all the topics they're interested in. Also, being so smart, they realize the meaningless of life, and they haven't learned to lie to themselves pretending there's a purpose in it.

The first problem is easy to solve. They just need to learn to focus in their favorite topics, to master the ones they love the most and accept their time limitations.

The second problem, their inherent nihilism, has a curious solution, and it's not a philosophical treaty, meditation or discovering the true path. It's simply to touch them, to console them with human contact.

It's amazing what an embrace can cure.
