Today, January 20th, is the small new year in China. In the lunar calendar, it’s December 23rd. The formal spring festival will be 6 days after today.
The time range for Chinese new year is pretty long, usually it won’t end until January 15th in the lunar calendar, which is also The Lantern Festival. People will start to prepare for spring festival since December 8th. In tradition culture, people value this festival very much, as it is the end of the last year and the beginning of a new year. This is a time when all the family members get together, and enjoy the holiday together. People will return home no matter where they are.
There are a number of traditional customs for the new year. For instance, people will put up new year's scrolls on their doors and walls, eat dumplings, play firecrackers, and give out lucky money.. They will go to meet their relatives and “pay New Year's call” to show their respects and wishes.
