My children started to keep a journal daily both in English and Japanese a year ago. They have also been reading both books written in English and Japanese 20 minutes respectively every day. I strongly believe that writing and reading are the most important to build educational foundation. I also think that it makes them to keep their Japanese, which they have been losing since they came to the US. They complained a lot why they had to do so many works for the first few months. I allow them to play video games for certain amount of time on weekends if they get the works done well. My strategy seems to be working well. They read books when they wake up in the morning and keep a diary right when they get home from school without my saying anything. People tend to hesitate to do something new, but it is easy to keep doing it once you make it a habit in your everyday life.
