I didn't have a chance to read the book in the original because I just didn't know about its existence. But then I came across the translation (it wasn't professional but the translator got in touch with the author and asked his permission). "Wingmen" was written in 1979 and it's about two American World War II pilots who are in love. I'm impressed with great amount of details about both off-duty life and operational flights. I've read an interview and it said the author had been believed to be dead by some readers. They thought that only war veteran could describe air battles so vividly.
In general I like the book, though the final isn't very happy. The main characters managed to pass through the war and they lived next 20 years together happily. Unfortunately nobody can guarantee immortality. Even in peacetime.
